This project takes the form of a thought experiment to explore how higher education might evolve over the coming decades in response to advances in artificial intelligence and the deregulation of the sector. A scenario set in 2050 is constructed through a series of dispatches (reports, news stories and case studies) following the deregulation of the sector in 2030. A Dispatch from 2050 will be published each week, and readers are encouraged to comment and discuss.
The purpose is not to claim that this future will occur exactly as described, but to use it as a lens through which to interrogate the assumptions, constraints, and possibilities shaping higher education today. Higher education is often assumed to be a fixed system, but this hides the extent to which it is shaped by government regulation, funding structures, and historical convention. By removing or altering these constraints, thought experiments reveal how different the system could be and how quickly it could change. Hopefully, it will help policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to think more critically about the direction of travel and the consequences of maintaining the status quo.
This project is being developed with the support of ChatGPT 5.4 Thinking, which is showing a remarkable ability to look into the future and describe different possibilities. The way in which AI is being used to help develop this thought experiment will be critically reviewed throughout the project and discussed on the following page, Thought Experiments and the use of AI.
